When will we be smart enough.....

.....as consumers, that is, that companies will trust us to enter our email addresses correctly?

Why is it, that in 2008, we're still having to enter our email address twice? I don't have to enter my name twice, or my phone number, or my credit card information twice.

Can't we be trusted to enter our email addresses correctly??

Besides, doesn't everyone just do what I do, and copy/paste email address from the first box to the second box, anyway?

So if by some chance I were a moron, and didn't know my own email address, I'd be copying/pasting the incorrect version.

Come on, web designers. Start treating us like we have a brain.

On my work site, where I have a page for newcomers to request an account, I ask for their current email address. And I only ask for it once.

So far, that has worked out just fine.

Hmm... Yeah, it's slightly annoying, but I don't think it's all that unreasonable. I think it's just added insurance to reduce the risk of not being able to contact someone if the email address is incorrect. I mean, one single letter misspelled in your street address doesn't guarantee that you won't receive mail; a single letter misspelled in the email address almost guarantees making the address useless, especially if it's the domain name mispelled. (Like if the domain name was misspelled.com . :-O )

Besides, I have had on more than one occasion finding that the email addresses I entered didn't match, so I find that extra step has actually helped (though rarely).
